Drama Play Sessions for Adults

Connecting the Mind & Body Through Personalized Drama Play Sessions at Think Joy Drama Therapy

The main difference between an experiential Drama Play session and a regular ‘talk-based’ session is that creativity becomes an active catalyst and guide in the therapeutic space and ‘work’. It can often become a subject from which personal insights are derived either in or post-session, for example: “like this character/ object/ image I am also…” or “I relate(d) to this because… ” or “when I did/ made/ created this I felt… or this action/movement reminded me of a time when…”

If you are looking for less action and more insight through talk-based therapy then jump to the Individual Psychotherapy page here. Talk based individual therapy at Think Joy Drama Therapy may still use/offer some creative interventions however in general sticks to a more traditional format.

How Drama Play Sessions Can Help

Insights which are uncovered through creative acts are often very powerful and help connect the mind and body to moments of catharsis (therapeutic relief of stuck emotions).

You may have trouble remembering your childhood or adolescence, have experienced gaslighting in relationships or experienced other types of complex chronic trauma such as abuse or systemic oppression.

Using guided creatively distanced therapeutic work such as what is offered in these Drama Play sessions for adults can help you sort through what belongs to you and what doesn’t. That way you can focus on re-engaging with self-compassion and rebuild your self-esteem in a gentle indirect way for long-term sustainability as you return to your core values.

How Drama Play Sessions are Organized

Drama Play Psychotherapy sessions are Drama Therapy focused, semi-structured, and personalized sessions for individuals.

This means that they follow a general structure of a ‘check-in’, a ‘warm-up’, a ‘main activity’ and a ‘closing’ similar to they way groups are organized. Throughout the session there may be pause points where you will be able and encouraged to reflect on what is coming up and in how you are feeling.

The session may be organized around a particular theme or style of therapeutic work such as role-play, free-style improvised or prompted theatrical expression, story-telling with objects, props, and/or costumes, visual artistic engagement, and/ or embodied somatic inspired work.
